Frosty Sunrise

It has been a while since I have visited my blog, I apologize for that and am going to get back into the blogging again. This morning on my way home from work I could not resist stopping to photograph this amazing sunrise over a frosty field. With the time change and driving home at 7:00 in the morning I often get to witness the majesty of a sunrise. All the brilliant colors of the morning sun breaking through the cold dark night.

As always you can click on the photo to see a larger size.

Enjoy,
Chris

Morning Jewels

There is nothing like the morning dew on a spider web. The small droplets refracting the early morning light is amazing. I looked around for the weaver of this web but was unable find the spider.

2011 Worldwide Photowalk

This past Sunday I hosted a photo walk in Gallipolis, Ohio as part of the 4th Annual Worldwide Photowalk. We had a good time walking around downtown Gallipolis. I had a small group and I was able to provide some one one one instruction with each of the participants. So now to share some of my photos from the walk.

New Framed Prints

I am excited to announce 4 new framed prints. These photographs are from my 365 Project and will be available at The Home Place in Gallipolis. These are printed on Fine Art Cotton Rag paper and float mounted. The pictures of these prints do not do them justice. Look for different prints to be available printed and framed like this.

The first is the sunflower print from a few weeks ago on Day 324.

The detail of the mounting can be seen in this picture. The print has torn edges and floats above the background. The mats also are spaced to create a shadow box.

The next print is of the full Moon rising. This photograph is from Day 219 on March 19, 2011 when the Moon was at its closest to the earth for the next 18 years.

Again this print is float mounted with the mat spaced to create a shadow box effect.

The next is from Day 2. This is one of my favorite pictures from the project.

The detail of the mounting can be seen below.

The last image I selected is a sunset one evening after a storm. This is from Day 274.

The detail can be seen below.

These are all framed in a smaller size. The first 3 prints are 5" x 7 1/2" framed to 8 1/2" x 11" and the sunset is a panoramic image and is 10 1/2" x 5" and framed to 13 1/2" x 8 1/2"

Off the Beaten Path

Friday I had to run some errands and decided to take a few back roads. The nice thing about being a paramedic is that I know most of the roads in the county. The sky had no haze and some light clouds so I thought I would make a few photographs along the way. I found an old log cabin at the fork in the road. A mile or so later, an abandon house. These images were just begging for a black and white conversion.

Hocking Hills

Last Saturday, myself, Steph and the boys went to Hocking Hills State Park to go hiking. We hiked from Cedar Falls to Old Man's Cave and back. A total of about 6 miles. I of course had my camera with me for some photography. I have been to Hocking Hills several times over the last few years and love going there to hike. The greens the foliage and moss make for some spectacular images. If you ever get a chance to go it is truly an amazing place just right in our backyard.

The sun shining through the foliage for some highlights along the creek.

The large cedar trees in the gorge make for impressive foreground and background objects.

All along the gorge are large formations carved by the flowing waters.

The trail crews make every effort to use materials found in the gorge to make stairs and bridges that blend with the environment.

The creek with small outcropping of moss covered, water worn sandstone.

The cool, damp micro climate of the gorge encourages moss and ferns to grow all along the gorge.

Jockeying for daylight and a place to grow, trees grow out of some amazing nooks and crannies, growing in odd directions to follow the sunlight.

Rocks along the trail seem to hang precariously at all angles, creating tight spaces to move through.

Erosion is still shaping the landscape at Hocking Hills. Whether carving new paths for water to flow or eroding tree roots causing trees to fall, the landscape is constantly changing.

Sunset

With my 365 Project completed I am working on a few new things. Yesterday evening after church I noticed as the sun was starting to set the sky was lighting up with oranges and reds. I did not have my camera with me so I stopped by the house to pick it up and head out for a few pictures. With calm winds I went down to the Ohio River to see if I could catch a few reflections. I did not spend very much time shooting but I was really happy with the few photographs I did take.

Day 365 of 365 - Late Night Fishing

Had big plans for a big finish. Been planning this amazing sunset photo for 2 weeks. Picked the location, scouted it and was ready to go. I knew what time to be there for the shot I wanted. Then things change, storms moved in and my sunset was blocked by clouds. Time to back up and punt, got home from Mom and Dad's and the power was out. So I grabbed the camera and tripod and headed to town. I saw this guy fishing along the banks of the Ohio River. The ice breakers in the background. His headlamp and gas lantern the only light around. It was not until I saw the long exposure did I see the other lights in the background.

One day to go! Tomorrow is my 36th birthday and the final day of my project. I have enjoyed it but at the same time look forward to moving on.

Day 363 of 365 - Moonlight

The light of the full moon is amazing. Since the light is actually reflected day light with long exposures it gives you blue skies just like daylight.

The big dipper was out and very obvious tonight. Even though the moon is almost full, you could easily pick out many constellations tonight.

Day 361 of 365 - Self

I work full time as a ground Paramedic and Part Time as a Flight Medic. It has been a while since I had done a self portrait, so this evening while at work I setup a self portrait. Luckily we did not have any runs while I set this up.

Day 360 of 365 - Fading Fast

As the sun was setting this evening I am more and more aware of how quickly this project is coming to an end. With only a few days remaining I have begun to explore possible new projects with my camera. Look for me to announce something soon.

Day 359 of 365 - Tassimo

This little machine makes some of the best coffee, one cup at a time. Everything from tea, hot chocolate, coffee and of course cappuccino and Lattes. We use this machine daily. The kids even use it to make hot water for oatmeal.

Day 358 of 365 - Mist on the Mountain

Well not a mountain but a hill. After heavy rains last night and this morning a light layer of mist was clinging to the trees around some of the hills. With more rain expected the last day of the Gallia County Fair looks like it will be a muddy one.

Day 357 of 365 - Shavings

I was working in the shop today trying to finish up a couple of projects. Though I have a full compliment of power tools, there is nothing like a well tuned wood plane. When they are razor sharp it is a joy to make a pile of shavings.

Day 355 of 365 - Fair Days

As summer comes to a close, so is my 365 project. I have only a few days to go until my 36th birthday and the end of this project. Since summer is coming to an end that means County Fairs. I stopped out last night while working to get a photograph for the day. The sun had just set, the lights on the rides and the moon setting I really enjoyed making this photograph.

Day 354 of 365 - The Little Black Camera

Almost 7 years ago I bought this Kodak Digital camera before our first Disney trip. We still use the little 4 megapixel camera and it produces good 4x6 prints. With my DSLR almost 4 years old now I am waiting for a replacement body due out this fall. With both the Kodak camera and my Sony A-100 I have used them until I learned their limits. Whenever I put either of these camera's to my eye I know how to make them produce the image I want.

Day 353 of 365 - Data

With digital photography, protecting your data is part of business. You have to put forth every effort to protect your images for your sake and your clients'. When I used a PC, I had a very robust backup and storage strategy that included 2 separate copies of all files on-site and on copy of the data stored on-line through a cloud service. When I upgraded to my Mac, this became less automated; and, for a short time, very clunky. I have reorganized my data storage back to a robust storage solution that is automated and helps me sleep at night again. This included adding more external hard drive space and more memory to the Mac.

Day 352 of 365 - Laryngoscope

This is one of the few tools carried on the squad that is reusable. We use it to lift the tongue out of the way to view the vocal chords and place an endotracheal tube. This procedure is used to protect the airway of a sick or injured patient.

Day 351 of 365 - Monorail Dreaming

This will be the first year in a long time we have not visited Walt Disney World. I was picking up and saw Isaac's toy Monorail out and it reminded me of some great times at Disney World.
